iTry Partners With British Council

iTry Nigeria has signed a partnership agreement with the British Council whereby the iTry Kano school rugby will provide an access point for 240 young rugby players to benefit from a mentoring programme.

The British Council will use their "Active Citizens" to mentor the young rugby players and counsel them on the dangers of drug abuse and violence against women and children.

This is a highly welcome development that will no doubt ensure Try graduates are well rounded individuals who can be a credit to their communities, Kano and Nigeria, as well as the game of Rugby.

Cheetahs and Boks rugby player Raymond Rhule spent the past weekend in Lagos with iTry.

Raymond's action packed visit coincided with the press launch of the N20 million Cowbell iTry schools rugby programme 2014, a fundraising dinner held at the WheatBaker Hotel and a schools rugby tournament.

At the press launch Raymond explained how he came by his love for the game of rugby, how much the game has given him, and his belief in the capacity of Nigerian youth. He further commended Cowbell for their visionary leadership in the iTry project.

The fundraising dinner, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the attendees, raised a fantastic N4 million for iTry. Our thanks to all those who contributed, to Olisa, the amazing MC, and to Raymond for his support.

The schools tournament featured six iTry schools including Barewa, all the way from Kano. Despite their long journey Barewa emerged winners, undefeated, in an exciting tournament. Raymond chose the player of the tournament, Michael from Barewa, and was on hand to present him a prize pair of Adidas rugby boots.

iTry Junior (U15) League 2014 Kicks Off in Lagos.

MATCH REPORTS by iTry Coaching Team

The iTry Junior Touch Rugby League Akoka Cluster that kicked-off at the host venue, C.M.S Grammar School, Bariga Lagos on the 14th of  May, 2014 at about 2:30pm moment the atmosphere was looking bright.

However, because time was not on our side, we decided to commence the league. There was little adjustment on the fixture due to the absent of TOYIBAT team in order to buy them some times, DENTON team and BAPTIST team kicked-off the first game. Salawu Adewunmi took an advantage play and score a try at 4minutes 32 seconds to make the difference between the two teams in favour of DENTON at the first half. At the second half, BAPTIST tried to level the points but their efforts were not capable enough to meet up the time. The match ended 5 to DENTON, nil to BAPTIST.

The second match was between QUEEN’S COLLEGE GIRLS versus DENTON GIRLS. It was a stage entertainment game at the first half. At the second half, after the pressure from both sides, QUEEN’S COLLEGE finally took possession and scored a try to made the difference between the two teams. After on 2 minutes having re-started the game, QUEEN’S COLLEGE putted more pressure on their opposing team closest on their try line. FAROUK MUNEE received the pass from DADA MERCY running into left direction and swerved in side-stepped almost the entire opposing team to the right to score the second try to sealed up the victory for her team. The match ended up 10 nil in favour QUEEN’S COLLEGE.

The third game was between C.M.S. AND DENTON. It was a fantastic game at the first half. C.M.S. player took an advantage play and ran in possession and swerved to the right hand side on 1vs1 against DENTON’s player, one hand touch couldn’t stretched enough to held him then he escaped and score a try to made the difference between the two team. Having re-starts, DENTON team took the possession of the game, and then 2 vs 1 occurred against C.M.S left winger, ran forwards to commit the winger and passed to SALAWU ADEWUNMI to level up points. The first half ended I all. At the second half, the two teams were in 50%/50% possession. Playing in caution but it was unfortunate to DENTON team; they couldn’t held-on in possession instead allowed CMS team to take over and putted pressure on them at their try line. With several efforts from CMS and pressure a player ran into space and stretched into the in-goal area of DENTON to score the try that gave them victory over the unpredictable DENTON TEAM. The game ended 10 to CMS AND 5 to DENTON all in favour CMS.

The fourth and fifth game was walk-over game. QUEEN’S played a walk-over match against TOYIBAT GIRLS while DENTON GIRLS played a work-over match against TOYIBAT GIRLS.

The sixth game was between BAPTIST and CMS. It was a tremendous game. Both sides kept possession in attacking and defending but a try separated the shape of the game in favour CMS where a quickly picked up of the ball in advantage as the ball dropped behind the BAPTIST’s player while trying to catch the ball. The second try also occurred against BAPTIST due to poor defend at first half. The second half was an interesting moment form both sides. They both played according to the instruction instructed by their superb coaches. At 11mins:2secs. BAPTIST took possession of the game at CMS half. ADENIKAN could have given hope to his team with the attempt for a try but he jumped up to touch try line over the defending line of CMS player which was dangerous in play instead a penalty was awarded to CMS. Stealthily, the game was still on play at about 15minutes, CMS’s coach, Coach TUNBOSUN and supporters were staring at their time calling the attention of the touch Judge to signer the referee. The referee finally stopped the play at 17mins:35secs. The game ended 10 nil in favour CMS which gave them victory to seal the champion of AKOKA cluster.
